Lord Bateman
“The Lord Bateman project sprang from Oberst’s interest in depictions of demonic beings by medieval artists and from his often-expressed desire to play a classic cinematic monster. “Frankly, my sympathies have always been with the monster,” he says, “and I’m tired of seeing demons who look like pretty people with FX contact lenses. Maybe it’s time for the return of the red devil.”
Oberst says the current screenplay outline places the action in 16th century Europe. “Lord Bateman is a man of royal lineage who is plagued by visions of himself as a demon. He comes to believe that he actually is a demon, cursed to live a human existence as punishment for some infraction down below. The question is whether he is right…or delusional. Of course, to his victims it matters little.” The actor says Lord Bateman will have both a hellishly brutal side and a gentle, sophisticated side evoking classic dark literary characters like Robert Louis Stevenson’s Henry Jekyll and Edgar Allan Poe’s Roderick Usher. “I’m a big fan of classic Hammer horror,” says Oberst, “and we’re adding a little hellfire to that vibe.” The Lord Bateman concept is based on original ideas from Oberst’s ‘Anatomy Of Fear’ and the novella ‘Cipher In The Sun’ by Ed Thomas, who shot the session with fellow photographer Spencer Filichia.”
